The Messages brand faced a critical decline in public perception–it was viewed as dated and uninteresting, with only basic functionality.

I developed and evangelized a new vision for Messaging, centered on augmenting self expression with the goal of building deeper connections.

This newly-resourced workstream was strategically timed with the release of the Google Pixel marketing launch, announced in 2024.

I designed a system of fullscreen message reactions triggered by specific keyboard inputs (e.g., "I love you", "👎👎"). I established a unique visual language that used z-space and gradients to add depth to flat graphics, providing direction with Oddfellows on execution.

Worked with the Google emoji team to bring emojis to life inside Messages. Defined an animation framework to define scale, legibility, length, and cycling behavior to ensure they worked in the messaging context.

In addition, the following gains were seen from the Photomoji launch:

  • +0.41% increase in images sent and +0.22% increase in image senders.
  • +0.65% increase in sticker senders on flagship devices for en launch and a 19% increase in sticker senders on flagship devices.
